The New Face of National Security Creates Unprecedented Demand for Criminal Justice, Information Security Experts and Programs to Train Them
As the nation continues to adapt to the realities of terrorism, and the public and business grow ever more reliant on technology, employment needs in the U.S. are shifting. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) Occupational Outlook Monthly Labor Review, Feb. 2004, job growth is predicted to grow in both law enforcement and technology over the next 10 years. And, according to the same report, employees with Bachelor degrees earn over 175 percent more than those with a high school diploma.
"To create Bachelor's programs that give our students industry-relevant, hands-on experience, we have worked closely with industry professionals to help students enter the job market with the ability to apply their knowledge in quickly-changing, demanding jobs," said Vicki Bowles, executive director of Westwood's Long Beach campus. "And, the fast-track programs enable students to focus on training for their careers and get out into the industry as soon as possible."
Classes begin May 26 and will fill quickly. Those interested in enrolling can call 310-522-2093 for more information.
ABOUT THE INFORMATION SECURITY SYSTEMS (ISS) PROGRAM
According to the 2004 BLS report, careers in network system and data communications analysis will grow 57 percent, and those in network and computer systems administration will grow over 34 percent in the next 10 years. Examples of entry-level ISS job titles include: network server administrator, firewall administrator, system administrator and IT security officer.
At Westwood, ISS students learn how to implement e-business security policies, identify security threats and develop countermeasures using firewall systems and attack-recognition technologies, and manage the deployment of security solutions. All of these skills are critical to our interconnected world, in all industries from law enforcement to banking to transportation.
Major corporations and small businesses alike doing business over the Internet have grown painfully aware of the damage that can be caused by malicious hackers. Security breaches and network failures can quickly bring a company to its knees.
ABOUT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAM
Public safety has become one of the highest profile issues over the last few years. The number of career opportunities in criminal justice and public safety is growing at the federal, state and local levels, according to the BLS. For instance, the 2004 BLS report predicts a 23.9 percent increase between now and 2012 in the number of law enforcement workers. Collegiate training aids police officers, detectives and special agents to enhance their job performance, as well as increase their earning potential.
ABOUT THE ANIMATION PROGRAM
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2003 Occupational Outlook Handbook, careers for multimedia artists and animators are expected to grow by 22 percent from now until 2010. Industries from entertainment to emergency response will employ trained people in these areas.
The Animation program at Westwood trains students to combine visual effects with live action to create animation for Web sites and other commercial applications. Jobs can include multimedia artist, Web designer and other video/audio designer positions.
