There are numerous criminal justice career opportunities in the corrections systems. Positions vary from depending on locations and facilities specific needs. From counselors to guards, needs change for inmates and offenders. Here is a short list of criminal justice positions in the corrections system, and a brief description of each.



Correctional Treatment Specialist
Provides guidance and/or support to inmate population. Usually works solely with inmate confines.

Corrections Counselor
Guides and counsels inmates during their incarceration. Can Conduct individual and group counseling sessions with inmates and should have a strong interest in helping others.

Corrections Officer
Guards, observes, and supervises inmates in a correctional facility.

Juvenile Justice Counselor
Counsel juveniles assigned to state youth division. Juveniles range from persons in need of supervision to hard core adolescents. Frequently works in an institutional setting.

Parole Officer
Employed in correctional facility or private agency. Investigates and take action for parole violations.

Probation Officer
Conducts reports and evaluations concerning release conditions. Works to rehabilitate and supervise offenders once they are released.

Juvenile Probation Officer
Provide intake, investigation, and supervising service to family court for juveniles.

Warden
Overall supervision and administration of correctional facility.

Vocational Counselors
Provides educational programs in vocational specialties for inmates. Determines learning needs, abilities, and other facts about inmates.

Recreation Counselors
Conducts and supervises the social activities of inmates.

Academic Teachers
Employed at all levels within the correctional facility.

Substance Abuse Specialist
Can be found in correctional institutions, pre-release and other alternative detention programs. Provides individual and group counseling.
