NVCC students explore careers in criminal justice, human services at Career Expo
To help remedy that, Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted a Career Expo today, giving more than 350 NVCC students the opportunity to talk to employers in the criminal justice and human services fields to find out if careers in those areas might be right for them.
Sponsored by NVCC's division of behavioral and social sciences, the Career Expo was designed as an educational event, instead of a career fair. As a result, students did not bring resumés, but instead simply had the opportunity to speak with representatives from 65 employers about what their jobs were like. Participants included the FBI, the state crime lab, the state department of homeland security, Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury, the Salvation Army Youth Shelter, Neighborhood Housing Services, the Western Connecticut Agency on Aging and others.
ââ¬ÅThere will never be too many applicants for jobs in human services or criminal justice,ââ¬Â said Kathy Sweeney, the job developer for the behavioral and social sciences division who helped plan the event.
ââ¬ÅThey are difficult jobs, but they are also very rewarding,ââ¬Â she said. ââ¬ÅThe Career Expo gave students a chance to explore possible career paths in these areas well before graduation by connecting directly with professionals from the field.ââ¬Â
NVCC's division of behavioral and social sciences offers associate degrees in both criminal justice and human services.
