
Criminal Justice Careers - Criminal Investigator
The Investigations Division investigates alleged violations of fraud, abuse and integrity laws that govern DOJ employees, operations, grantees, and contractors. The Investigations Division Special Agents develop cases for criminal prosecution and civil or administrative action.
The Attorney General has established a maximum entry age of 37 for original entry into law enforcement officer positions. Exceptions up to age 40 may be granted only in unusual circumstances. Applicants who have previously been employed in a Federal law enforcement officer position covered by P.L. 93-950 are not restricted from applying. This position has primary law enforcement officer retirement coverage.
The incumbent will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and to maintain firearm proficiency.
Prior to appointment, the person selected for this position must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties, and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician.
A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant?s successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
Selectee must sign a mobility agreement to accept relocation to other geographic areas if required by the Agency.
In accordance with Executive Order 12564, applicants selected for this position are required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is a drug-testing designated position subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
DUTIES of Criminal Investigator:
The incumbent of this position serves as a Special Agent performing a variety of criminal investigative and analytical assignments to include: Evaluates assigned investigations. Analyzes initial allegations and recommends the extent of required investigative resources, and the necessity for collateral support, plans, organizes and personally conduct investigations with regard to a wide variety of allegations; plans and conducts surveillance or undercover work.
Apprehends and arrests persons violating U.S. laws and conducts searches and seizures incident to the arrest or when appropriate, by warrant. Coordinates, as team leader, major multi-agent cases or investigations that involve multiple subjects. Plans workload and directs other criminal investigators. As necessary, trains lower-graded criminal investigators in investigative methods and techniques.
Provides technical assistance to other law enforcement personnel by evaluating and discussing investigative problems and making suggestions. drafts and prepares concise and logical reports of investigations and summaries, including recommendations for prosecutive and corrective actions. Participates in the formulation, interpretation, application and execution of plans, policies, standards, and procedures affecting the conduct of investigations.
Prepares reports and testimony to include testifying as a government witness before Grand Juries in the courts in criminal cases and at administrative hearing in non-criminal cases.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of U.S. laws, regulations, and policies applicable to the organization's law enforcement, inspection, or compliance mission.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
MINIMUM FEDERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifying experience for the GS-13 level includes one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-12 level which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must be sufficiently intact and functioning in order that applicants may perform the duties satisfactorily. Sufficiently good vision in each eye, with or without correction, is required to perform the duties satisfactorily. Near vision, corrective lenses permitted, must be sufficient to read printed material the size of typewritten characters. Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz levels. Since the duties of this position are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any physical condition that would cause the applicant to be a hazard to himself/herself, or others is disqualifying.
