Uniformed Police Officers ââ¬â General law enforcement duties including routine patrol and public safety and welfare.

College and University Police Forces These agencies have geographic juristrictions to enforce the law. Most of these police officers are uniformed, although some employ plain clothes officers as well.

Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs Enforce the law on the county level. The Sheriff of a county is usually an elected position and they perform the same duties as a police chief in a large city.

State Police Officers- Work statewide to enforce the law. State Police Officers cover from traffic, to court duties all the way to investigations.

Police Detectives- Usually plain clothes officers who gather facts and evidence about particular cases in hopes of getting a conviction. Police Detectives usually specialize in one field of police work such as homicide, robbery or vice.

FBI- The U.S. government employs a number of police agencies including the FBI and Secret service, along with many others.

U.S. Marshalls- Duties of U.S. Marshalls is to protect the courts and uphold the judicial system. They have the widest juristriction of all police agencies and usually have some part in major federal law enforcement efforts.

Department of Homeland Security- Homeland security encompasses border patrol, immigration and customs enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security's mission is to block illegal immigration along with customs and narcotic seizures.

Federal Air Marshalls- Protect our nation's airways by providing air security. In most cases they fly incognito as ordinary passengers.
