A Computer Forensics Investigator follows the clues left on a computer to solve technology crimes. Essentially the Computer Forensics Investigator follows the data left behind on a computer to be used to identify and prosecution of a criminal. Most Computer Forensics Investigators are actual police officers.

The Computer Forensics Investigator is called in to restore erased data off of computers hard drives. They do this by using special recovery programs not available to the general public. In addition the Investigators are often forced to decipher encryption software to produce the required information. The forensics information is given to the Investigator in charge to help build a case against the suspect. A Computer Forensics Investigator must have a strong knowledge of computers, both hardware and software. The C.F.I. will sometimes work for days to restore an erased hard drive or break a code on a computer.

General Job Duties of a Computer Forensics Investigator


Restore hard drives and erased or encrypted files to be used for prosecution.

Log and present reports to the Chief Investigator listing all information found.

Continuous training or study to stay current with the latest computer systems, software and encryption methods.

Testify in court as needed on evidence found and how said evidence was collected.

For someone who likes working with computers, but is considering a criminal justice career this job can be the perfect mix of both. Although these professionals sometimes work long tedious hours, the pay and benefits is excellent and theyâll be making a difference in society.
